Overview

Traveling through Argentina as a backpacker or budget traveler often means juggling fragmented information across multiple platforms. Dale Ruta was created to change this. Imagine navigating the vibrant streets of Buenos Aires or exploring remote areas without worrying about safety, connectivity, or resources. Dale Ruta centralizes essential tools, including offline maps, personalized itineraries, and safety alerts, making travel not just seamless but also secure.

With its Argentina-specific focus and offline functionality, Dale Ruta empowers travelers to explore confidently and stay connected, even in the most remote destinations.

This project was a collaborative effort undertaken by a team of designers and researchers, each contributing their unique skills and perspectives. Screens, sketches, and iterations were developed collectively to ensure the best user experience.

As a UX designer, I worked closely with my team on various phases of the project, from brainstorming and prototyping to usability testing and implementation.

This project was designed in Spanish, reflecting my ability to create user-centered solutions for diverse audiences. While I am still learning English, I’ve translated this case study to share my work with a broader professional audience.

The Problem Statement

Navigating Fragmented Travel Information

Travelers often face numerous hurdles while planning their journeys, especially in regions like Argentina, where resources may not always be readily accessible.

“Backpackers and budget travelers lack a centralized platform to access essential travel resources efficiently, forcing them to navigate multiple platforms for affordable accommodations, activities, and safety information. This fragmented process leads to frustration, compromises safety, and fails to address offline accessibility needs in areas with limited internet.”

The Challenge

Unveiling the Problem

Key challenges we identified include:

Fragmented Resources:

Information on accommodations, activities, and transport scattered across various platforms.

Limited Connectivity:

Difficulty accessing reliable tools in remote areas with poor internet coverage.

Safety Concerns:

Lack of clear safety alerts or emergency points specific to destinations.

Discovering Traveler Insights: Who We’re Helping

The research phase revealed two primary user groups with distinct yet overlapping needs:

Backpackers

  1. Needs: Flexibility, real-time safety information, and connections with other travelers.
  2. Challenges: Navigating remote areas without internet access, finding volunteering opportunities, and staying safe.

Budget Travelers

  1. Needs: Cost-effective solutions, structured itineraries, and reliable recommendations for accommodations and activities.
  2. Challenges: Balancing affordability with safety, avoiding tourist traps, and managing unexpected expenses.

Research Methodologies

Laying the Groundwork for User-Centric Design

To ensure Dale Ruta effectively addressed user needs, we employed a mix of research techniques to gather insights and validate our approach.

Desktop Research

This method allowed us to analyze existing websites and applications offering similar products or services. By identifying the strengths and weaknesses of competitors, we uncovered trends and best practices in design. The insights helped us refine our ideas, ensuring that our proposal was both innovative and aligned with market expectations and user needs.

Surveys

Surveys provided valuable quantitative insights, helping us identify common patterns and trends in user preferences. By analyzing the responses of 50 participants, we validated hypotheses and gained a broad overview of user opinions. To complement this data, we used qualitative methods, such as interviews, to deepen our understanding of user behavior and motivations.

Interviews

Through in-depth interviews with eight participants, we explored user experiences, motivations, and behaviors that are not easily uncovered through other methods. The flexibility of interviews allowed us to adapt questions in real-time, gaining deeper insights and validating or challenging our initial assumptions.

Discovery and Research

Competitive Analysis

Competitive Insights: Improving on Existing Platforms

A competitive analysis revealed opportunities to surpass global competitors by offering localized features and offline functionality:

Product Strengths Weaknesses
Workaway Connects travelers with hosts globally, offering accommodation and food in exchange for work. Limited focus on insights specific to Argentina and also lacks offline functionality for remote travel.
Couchsurfing Promotes cultural exchange by connecting travelers with locals offering free accommodation and local events. No focus on safety tools or itinerary planning; relies heavily on online connectivity.
Worldpackers Offers structured volunteering opportunities with hostels, farms, and social causes worldwide. Primarily geared toward volunteering rather than comprehensive travel planning; lacks safety-specific features.
iOverlander Collaborative platform offering updated information for overland travelers, such as campsites and mechanics. Overland-specific and lacks tools for broader trip planning, such as personalized itineraries or community forums.

Dale Ruta was to fill these gaps with its localized content, streamlined navigation, and offline features designed specifically for Argentine travel.

Personalized Itineraries Enhance Experiences

Users appreciated the idea of creating custom travel routes tailored to their preferences, helping them save time and plan efficiently.

Community and Collaboration

Forums and blogs for sharing real-time tips and connecting with other travelers were highly valued, especially for discovering hidden gems and learning from others’ experiences.

What Worked:

Intuitive Navigation:

Users found the app easy to use, with activities and workflows clearly laid out.

Itinerary Management:

Saving and modifying itineraries were seamless and highly appreciated.

Aesthetic Design:

The app’s clean design avoided overwhelming users, making it visually appealing.

What Needed Improvement:

Button Sizes and Visibility:

1. Buttons were too small and difficult to press.
2.Deactivated buttons lacked contrast, making them hard to identify.

Navigation Challenges:

1. The spinner occasionally caused confusion, trapping users in a loop.
2. No clear button for returning to the previous screen.

Filter Menu Issues:

1. The “X” button in the hamburger menu was unclear to users.

Color Usage:

1. Button colors were not intuitive, leading to usability issues.

Solutions and Iterations:

1. Improved Button Design:

Increased button size and added high-contrast colors for better visibility and accessibility.

2. Enhanced Navigation:

Fixed spinner loop issues and added a clear “Back” button for better user flow.

3. Filter Menu Redesign:

Simplified the hamburger menu and replaced the “X” button with a more intuitive icon.

4. Security Emphasis:

Incorporated security features (e.g., safe zones and emergency points) into the filter screen and map, as highlighted during surveys and interviews.
